Consciousness, Devotion, and Bliss

The Orange Node Borders the Red Node

Kabir

One can talk about Consciousness as the unknowable God, the Ground of Being, which contains all potential and yet is beyond everything. That’s a legitimate way of describing the Transcendental Divine Identity from the perspective of the Orange node where the word “God” has that particular meaning in some schools of non-dual devotion.

Nanak

There are saints of devotion, who are in love with the formless Absolute to the point of non-dual Identity. Kabir, Nanak, and Ravidas are examples from India and perhaps Rumi and Hafiz from Iran.

Ravidas

When you read them, you sense that the One they are devoted to, and in love with, is both beyond them and yet is also their own deepest Identity.

Rumi

Their Beloved is beyond their small personal sense of themselves; when they surrender to that One, they lose themselves altogether as the small “I.” That’s an Orange node or devotional teaching blending into the Red node and would be in shades between Red and Orange like Vermilion.

Hafiz

The Purple Node Also Borders the Red Node

Some non-dual schools also include and emphasize teachings on the Radiance of Being, Shakti, Bliss or Presence as a door from the Purple node into The Red node. Those would be Maroon.

Although they are describing Consciousness Itself, they talk about bliss or a feeling of expansion, peace or grace as part of the description. This is because it is a major challenge to speak about Red without including some Purple in it. It is really almost impossible to say anything about Consciousness without also talking about qualities, even though Consciousness, in itself, doesn’t have any qualities.

Because Consciousness doesn’t have any qualities, you can’t speak about it in and of itself. In fact, it’s nearly impossible to talk about Consciousness without talking about it as if it were a spiritual object or state. Many of the descriptions of Consciousness, and the pointing out instructions, include words like spaciousness, openness, peace, and bliss. These are depictions that are taking in a little bit from the Purple node, including subtle objects of awareness (like peace or openness) to help us track and point beyond them into the Red node.

Consciousness is not ever an object of Awareness. Qualities such as peace, grace, bliss, and openness are objects of Awareness, they are not Awareness, itself. You often hear descriptions of Consciousness that include the word “radiance,” which is using Purple node language to point to Red.
